 | International Friendsgiving: A Culturally Diverse Feast To-Go

Celebrate diversity this year by participating in the annual “International Friendsgiving Feast To-Go” through Church World Service in Harrisburg. Those interested reserve five-course meals ($25 per person) by November 18 and then pick them up in Harrisburg to eat at home*. This year’s foods are from Afghanistan, Sudan, Syria, Somalia, and Venezuela! Pick-up is from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Hadee Mosque, 245 Division Street in Harrisburg. *See Pastor Scott if you’d prefer to gather and eat at the church.

Food insecurity is an official term from the USDA. It's when people don't have enough to eat and don't know where their next meal will come from — a big problem in the United States but also a surprisingly big problem in Lancaster County. Join us in the Good Shepherd Classroom when our guest presenter will help us understand local food insecurity and our members will share the ways our congregation responds to food insecurity.

You can reserve a FREE Thanksgiving Turkey Box. This box includes everything you need to make a Thanksgiving meal at home. Call (717) 537-1024 and leave a message as to whether you want Box 1 or Box 2 — include your first name and please spell your last. Box 1 serves 1-2 people, including 5lbs of potatoes, stuffing, canned sweet potatoes, vegetable and turkey for two. Box 2 serves 4-6 people, and includes 5lbs of potatoes, stuffing, canned sweet potatoes, vegetable and a whole turkey. You can pick up your meal at the church’s back entrance on MONDAY, November 24 from 12:00-5:00 pm. Limit one box per family. Come by vehicle since carrying either size box any distance may prove a challenge for some. Sorry, we’re not able to deliver.

Join us in the Good Shepherd Classroom for this first of a three-week series — an overview celebrating cultural and religious differences during Advent and Christmas. It will invite us to look beyond ourselves and learn how diverse faith and cultural communities celebrate during this season.

Bushels of Love in November will go to Angel Tree Giving. Though there are no angels on a tree this year, giving is still what we are called to do for people in need. In that spirit during November, winter gloves, hats, and socks will be gratefully received and later handed out at the Grace Meal in December. No wrapping is necessary. Though we still encourage donations for both women, and children, the biggest need is collecting those items for men.

A specifically-needed list is made available in the Narthex. If you would like to make a monetary donation, you can use the special envelopes in the Narthex. Please write “December Bushels of Love” on the envelope and put the envelope in an offering plate.

 | Fine Arts Series: Lancaster British Brass Band

This popular ensemble follows the path first laid down in the smoky mill and mining towns of mid-nineteenth century Britain. Gradually evolving into a fixed instrumentation of 28 players (and 1 conductor), the brass band flourished under the sponsorship of mill and mine owners bent on “moral and spiritual uplift,” thus laying the ground- work for a later time when the Salvation Army began capitalizing on the success of the bands by establishing brass bands as part of their outreach through music.
